AS THE night drew on, the guests seemed to disperse from the dining table and find their way into the drawing room. One guest ambitiously played the xylophone, performing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata to an intoxicated crowd. As I made my way into the library, I found a crowd that had gathered around Grace and Prudence, who were engaged in a raunchy display of affection. Grace lifted her leg above the head of Prudence, who dove under her dress, lifting it to expose her leg up to the inner thigh and revealing a garter, which he slowly dragged down her soft flesh with his teeth, peeling it off with his hands. He pretended to hand his prize to various members of the audience in mock chivalry and then bolted from the room, pursued by his entourage.
They charged through the house like a stampede, knocking over furniture and various items along the way, including a precious Russian vase which shattered into dozens of pieces once it hit the ground. They made their way out onto the patio and began ripping off Prudence’s clothes in hedonistic fashion, and Prudence seemed to revel in the role of Bacchus. Once he was fully nude, he dove into the small fountain next to the manor and began kicking up the water while singing lullabies. He shoved the garter into his mouth and paddled across the water with it between his teeth as a dog would. The other guests began stripping down as well, and those that didn’t join him in the fountain lay down on the grass and began copulating.
I marveled at this sybaritic sight and was unsure whether to protest such profane displays of affection or to join them. In my ambivalence, I simply stood there with tray in hand, waiting for the party to end. Sebastian also marched out onto the patio and watched the crowds engage in pagan celebrations. His expression was somewhat less approving than mine, and he grimaced at the guests. The ecstasy lasted for a little under an hour, and then the crowds slowly dispersed, returning to the manor, many of them in various stages of undress. Church was out, and the choir of devotees returned from their hedonistic worship. Lilith, who had remained in the dining room, chatting with some of her most treasured admirers, finally bid the crowd adieu and slowly made her way to her room.
I assisted her as she walked through the troves of gifts to the stairway, but she cheerfully shooed me away, defiantly informing me that “I can do this myself, darling.” I stood at the base of the stairs, praying she would reach the top, and as she slowly climbed the steps, a large group collected to wish her a good night. As Lilith reached the summit, she turned to wave good-bye to the masses, and her bent body suddenly went erect and folded like a crushed leaf, clattering down the stairs and shattering like a crystal vase at the base.
We all ran to her, desperate to see if she was alive or dead.
